Although the layman generally doesn’t know it, heat shrink tubing is an extremely essential part of electronics. Heat shrink tubing is used for many things, but mainly to insulate “hot” wires, and to bind groups of wires together. Heat shrink tubing is categorized by the shrink ratio and by the shrink temperature. It is important to know these things when you purchase your tubing; if you get the wrong kind, you could end up damaging electronics by exposing them to too much heat.

Digital Clamp Meter

Clamp meters are one of my favorite measurement tools for two reasons. The first reason is that they are direct application of Ampere’s Law. Andre-Marie Ampere was a French physicist who laid very important foundations of electrodynamics, specifically about how electric currents produce magnetic fields. Many people learn about Ampere’s Law, but don’t ever directly see its implications. The second reason is clamp meters allow you to take current measurements without physically tapping into the current carrying line. All you have to do is clamp the meter around the line to get a reading.

Multimeters are very handy because they incorporate multiple measurement tools into one appliance. Generally, a multimeter is capable of measuring AC and DC voltages and currents. Resistance and power are functions of voltage and current, so often times a multimeter can also report resistance and power readings. Multimeters are a very fundamental tool for electricians, so they are very common and can be acquired for a reasonable price.
